Our Story …

Aviation Engineer Sam and Paramedic Dan are really pleased to announce that they are taking part in Shitbox Rally 2025 - Winter! This year, all the teams are driving their Shitboxes from Perth all the way to Darwin. We have just purchased a stock 1993 Holden Apollo for this epic adventure, let's hope we can make it!

Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 15th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the Winter 2025 rally target set at $2,000,000 plus. We want to try and raise well above this and need your generosity and support.

These funds go to Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated and a taxable deduction. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

<p>Things have started to gain traction. For this 2025 mission, we’ve scored an all-original 1993 Holden Apollo to kick off this epic adventure! And trust us, there's a hilarious and one-of-a-kind story behind how we ended up with this beauty... If you see us out on the road, ask us about it. Now, it’s time to hit the wreckers and hunt down some crucial parts to bring this beast to life and get us back on the road!</p>

<p>A Big thanks to City Discount Tyres - Marion for sorting out the 6 new shoes we needed for the car. Light Truck tyres should hopefully help reduce the risk of a blow out with some of the roads we will be undertaking....... Then again</p>

<p>What was supposed to be a quick swap of the ancient CV joints (which were barely hanging on for dear life) turned into an adventure. Sam bravely volunteered to tackle the job, only to find himself in a epic showdown with the stubborn old joints. After a heroic struggle - and maybe a few choice words - they finally popped out, accompanied by a surprise splash of oil, like the car's way of saying, "Gotcha!"</p>

<p>The Sticker Chaos at ShitBox HQ</p><p></p><p>With the charity golf day just two days away, ShitBox HQ was buzzing. Sam, armed with sponsor stickers and a squeegee, declared, “Time to turn the Apollo into Cinderella at the ball!” The car, affectionately called “The Rolling Bin,” was about to get its big makeover.</p><p>Sam meticulously applied stickers, while Dan “helped” by testing if leftover decals could make racing flames. “Sponsors love flames!” he grinned. Sam shot back, “It’s a golf day, not Fast &amp; Furious: Fairway Drift!”</p><p></p><p>A gust of wind sent stickers flying. Chaos ensued as the team scrambled to catch them, tripping over tools and each other. After an hour of sticker wrestling, the Apollo stood proudly, sponsors’ logos gleaming—if slightly crooked.</p><p>“Cinderella ready for the ball!” Dan declared. “More like Cinderella after midnight,” Sam muttered, laughing.</p><p></p><p>With snacks, gear, and a plastic flamingo mascot loaded, they sputtered off, determined to continue to raise money for the Cancer Council — one chaotic mile at a time.</p>

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$50 million over the past 15 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

  • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
  • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
  • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
